Ground-breaking ceremony for MKL on May 12, 2003
A brandnew
bulk logistics facility will be constructed in Schkopau
One year ago, the American chemical group DOW has invited for a tender for a new logistics complex in Schkopau near Leipzig / Germany.
The SCHMIDT Group was employed with this complex project in close cooperation with Finsterwalder Transport and Logistics headquartered
in Kaufbeuren/Germany. Both companies will organize the construction and operation of this facility together.
Precondition for this contract was not only the excellent existing relationship with DOW at other sites in Europe, but
also the longstanding good know-how of both companies. Dow claimed for this tender that the SCHMIDT Group and Finsterwalder will act as one company. For this reason, “MKL” (Mitteldeutsche-Kunststoff-Logistik GmbH & Co.KG ) was
founded.
Attended by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Dr. Horst Rehberger, and other invited guests, a small ground-breaking ceremony for this new bulk logistics center was held on Monday, May 12, 2003 at the value
park of DOW, Schkopau.
The new logistics facility will consist of a warehouse for packed goods with ca. 10,380 m² storage space, as well as a silo battery comprising 70 silos for the storage of bulk resins.
In total, more than 300,000 tons of Polypropylene will be handled at this site.
The silo battery will be constructed with an intermediate floor, on which a flexible bagging machine will be installed. With this technical solution, it
will be possible to bag up to 45 tons per hour into sacks of 25 kgs. The silos have a capacity of 500 m³ each, providing a total storage capacity of approx. 17,500 tons of bulk resins.
Until the end of 2003, the 17-million Euro
logistics complex will completed on a surface area of approx. 26,000 m²,
Creating about 35 new employments from that time.
The implementation of the warehouse- and handling complex is scheduled for January 2004.
