In 1971, the first SCHMIDT Group subsidiary outside of Germany was established at Wommelgem near Antwerp, Belgium.

The main aim of this subsidiary was to organise return loads from the Benelux area in order to increase service efficiency. At the same time, a tank cleaning facility was constructed to ensure vehicles were prepared for their next load.

Following the demand for storage capacity, a silo complex together with a conventional warehouse was constructed in the port of Antwerp. Container handling facilities were added in order to unload deep-sea bulk containers into road tankers or tank containers.
